1. 'MANIFESTO FOR THE BOOK' BY SARAH BODMAN AND TOM SOWDEN I contacted Sarah Bodman as she is a leading artist in artists books at UWE. She sent me some interesting links to book artists and LIBERATURE MOVEMENT what sparked further research on the subject.  'Manifesto for the Book' it's an exciting catalogue of book artist from all over the world.  It's available online on  manifestopdf cover2 (uwe.ac.uk)  [Accessed 12.12.20] I was mainly interested in the chapter and interview with Radoslaw Nowakowski on book art in Poland and how the Liberature movement distances itself from artists books. (p.11-24) ' SIENKIEWICZA STREET IN KIELCE, Radoslaw Nowakowski. 17 x 31 cm (folded) 50 x 1050 cm (unfolded), language: English, Polish, Esperanto and others, 2002, deskjet printer, hardbound (brown / yellow linen) + plywood box, open edition. WHAT A BOOK CAN BE?...

I GUESS THIS DEBATE IS A LONG AS BOOKS ARE AROUND. AS NOTION FOR WRITTEN WORD THAT WE KNOW - for centuries. As an object in its own right? - not very long. The debate is open and lively.  AT THE BEGINNING OF 20TH CENTURY ARTIST BEGAN TO RETHINK THE IDEA OF A BOOK AND LANGUAGE IN GENERAL:  Things started to become more abstract, fitted with new and modern concepts of deconstruction and availability.  (11) Pinterest  [ACCESSED 14.12.20] "CAN BOOKS WITHOUT MUCH EXPLANATION, WITHOUT BEING READ EVEN, SAY SOMETHING?" - Ms Virginia Bartow on 'Ninety from the Nineties: A Decade of Printing' at the New York Public Library  Books as Art Objects (Reading Is Optional) - The New York Times (nytimes.com) [Accessed 6.12.20 ] ''Ninety From the Nineties: A Decade of Printing'' is an exhibition built around a conundrum that lies at the center of most surveys of the book as object. The tension centers on purpose: books, which we are accustomed to thinking of as containe...

A BIT OF SYMBOLISM - TRANCE FLOWER

Image
Pinwheel Cave rock art in California may depict hallucinogenic 'trance flower' (msn.com) [ACCESSED 4.12.2020] Cave paintings linked to early use of hallucinogens - Big Think datura-wrightii6.jpg (900×675) (americansouthwest.net) [ACCESSED 4.12.20] A DOUBLE PAGE FROM 'BLUE' I created my book last year. All the illustrations were created with minimal sketching and concept drawings. It all happened one by one while creating the story and following the narrative. This interesting article about cave painting caused by a hallucinogenic agent is quite striking! The resemblance coincides with my drawing. 'A trance flower' painting against my - a universe - mind - journey - to unknown - illustration. I would like to believe there is something primal. An archetype of reoccurring symbol/motif. An archetypal journey representing the quest to understand the mind.

WHAT IS 'MINDLESS WONDER' / REVIEWING RESEARCH QUESTION /

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES (500 WORDS): - One of my aims is to use the graphic novel to talk about mental wellbeing in a lighthearted manner, where words and images create a coherent whole, literal, abstract and metaphorical. My aim is to present a body of work where the reader participates as narrator, discovering and creating her/his own emotional and personal meaning realising and benefiting from it.  - As a response to a previous module 'ANALYZING PRACTICE IN GRAPHIC ARTS'- and the first chapter from Rebecca Solnit's 'A Field Guide to Getting Lost' the idea of 'lost mind' started formulating and it continues to grow. The story has a twofold meaning, but it ultimately leads to a peaceful end. - Inspired by Polish Futuristic poem by Tytus Czyzewski 'The Eye of the Tiger', and general interest of the poetry and literature from that period, especially the ways language and the words were treated and deconstructed, I created a narrative to express a state of...
