WORD AS IMAGE - IMAGE AS WORD - VAN DER GRAAF

 VAN DOESBURG (as image?)

Here are some interesting answers after posting the image on Facebook:

Can you tell me what you see and how long it took you to get it, does it remind you of anything and your personal feeling about it?

         'I read 'The human mind'...?'

'The End...'

'I like that type, shape and colour.
Not sure if it's really The End cos that letter down left corner makes me confused'

'The mind. Straight away. Makes me think of pieces of torn paper put together as letters'

'To the end ...'

'The mind and The End! (About 5 mins)
makes you feel a little disorientated, questionable and deep in your thoughts!
Reminds me of tribal drawings and hieroglyphics!'

'Love it. Looks like a block print... Japanese... Reading: the end. Ten. Mind. Didn't take me long'

'Now I also see the human mind
That took quite a while'

'I see a face 😮 I read "The mind"'

'I think I am the only one who can see 'The home' and a little house in the pic
Also 'The man' how bizarre! Love it!'

'I see a face.
The word ‘The’.
It's confrontational, quite angry.
Can’t make our another word.
Feels a bit threatening.'

'The overall impression I get from it is a stoic easter island statue face - it feels like an ancient artefact to me, not only because of the 'face' but the rough appearance of the lines...if it reads 'the end' then perhaps an artefact discovered in a booby-trapped cave or something lol It's a great design I really like it. I really like the ambiguity of it, especially combined with what I perceive as a nod to the ancients.'

'Easter Island Head'

'I saw THE MONTH straight away but I’m dyslexic so my brain jumps as if it’s an anagram. It reminds me of the carvings on a totem pole'

Basic motion experiment with Van Doesburg type in relation to the previous image. I tried to use blocks of text, colour and sound to express the unnerving state of mind...An intro to the narrative. BLUE MIND...

An idea for text/image page to be decoded

Below is an example of how will it look in the book:

VAN DER GRAAF CANON
FROM THE PREVIOUS MODULE
'DEVELOPING PRACTICE
IN GRAPHIC ARTS'

THIS IDEA WAS EVENTUALLY LEFT BEHIND AS TOO CLASSICAL AND TRADITIONAL APPROACH.
